'''Fræna''' is a [[List of former municipalities of Norway|former municipality]] in [[Møre og Romsdal]] [[Counties of Norway|county]], [[Norway]]. The {{convert|370|km2|adj=on}} municipality existed from 1840 until its dissolution in 2020. The area is now part of [[Hustadvika Municipality]] in the [[Traditional districts of Norway|traditional district]] of [[Romsdal]]. The municipality was located on the [[Romsdal peninsula]] surrounding the [[Frænfjorden]], the eastern shore of the [[Julsundet]] strait, and it included most of the [[Hustadvika]] area. It also included the now-abandoned [[Bjørnsund]] islands. 

The main village and [[administrative centre]] in Fræna was [[Elnesvågen]]. Other villages in Fræna included [[Hustad]], [[Bud, Norway|Bud]], [[Tornes]], [[Sylte, Hustadvika|Sylte]], [[Malme]], and [[Aureosen]]. [[Moxy Engineering]], Hustad Marmor, and [[Tine (company)|Tine Meierier]] are all factories located in Elnesvågen.  

Prior to its dissolution in 2020, the {{convert|370|km2|adj=on}} municipality was the 250th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Fræna Municipality was the 115th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of about 9,800. The municipality of Fræna was established in 1840 when it was separated from [[Aukra Municipality|Akerø Municipality]]. Originally, it was named ''Vaagø Municipality'' and it surrounded the [[Frænfjorden]]. Later the name was changed to ''Fræna Municipality''.<ref name="Dag" />

During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the [[Schei Committee]]. ===Name===
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) was first named {{lang|no|Vaagø}}, after the old ''Vaagøen'' farm ({{langx|non|Vágøy}}) since the first [[Vågøy Church]] was built there. The first element is {{wikt-lang|non|vágr}} which means "bay" or "sea". In 1865, the municipal name was changed to {{lang|no|Frænen}}, after the [[Frænfjorden]] ({{langx|non|Fræni}}). The meaning of the fjord name is unknown, but it may have been derived from the word {{lang|non|frænn}} which means "bright" or "shiny". ===Coat of arms===
The [[coat of arms]] was granted on 15 May 1995 and it was in use until 2020 when the municipality ceased to exist. The official [[blazon]] is ''"[[Or (heraldry)|Or]], three [[Bar (heraldry)|bars]] wavy [[Azure (heraldry)|azure]] crested to the [[Dexter and sinister|dexter]] on the upper edge"'' ({{langx|no|På gull botn tre blå bjelkar der overkantane er teikna med kvervelsnitt}}). This means the arms have a [[field (heraldry)|field]] (background) has a [[tincture (heraldry)|tincture]] of [[Or (heraldry)|Or]] which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. The [[charge (heraldry)|charge]] is three horizontal bars designed too look like [[ocean surface waves]]. The arms were chosen to symbolize the municipality's connection to the sea. There are three bars to represent the three former municipalities which were merged to form Fræna Municipality in 1964: Fræna, [[Bud Municipality|Bud]], and [[Hustad Municipality|Hustad]]. The arms were designed by Jarle Skuseth. The municipality of Fræna was located on the northwestern end of the [[Romsdal Peninsula]]. The [[Norwegian Sea]] was to the north; the [[Harøyfjorden]], [[Julsundet]] strait, and [[Aukra Municipality]] were to the west; [[Molde Municipality]] was to the south; and [[Gjemnes Municipality]] and [[Eide Municipality]] were to the east.

The [[Frænfjorden]] cut into the middle of the municipality. The coastal areas were low and marshy while the interior of the municipality was mountainous. The highest point in the municipality was the {{convert|981.4|m|adj=on}} tall mountain Kvannfjellet.<ref name="elev" /> Other notable mountains in Fræna were [[Jendemsfjellet]], [[Høgheitinden]], and [[Lågheiane]]. The [[Bjørnsund]] islands were located off the northwestern coast of Fræna. They are now uninhabited, but the [[Bjørnsund Lighthouse]] is still in operation.

==Government==
While it existed, Fræna Municipality was responsible for [[primary education]] (through 10th grade), outpatient [[Health care|health services]], [[old age|senior citizen]] services, [[welfare spending|welfare]] and other [[Social work|social services]], [[zoning]], [[economic development]], and municipal [[road]]s and utilities. The municipality was governed by a [[Municipal council (Norway)|municipal council]] of [[Direct election|directly elected]] representatives.
