In 2009 he made his directorial debut with ''[[A Single Man]]'',<ref name=gale /> based on the novel of the same name by [[Christopher Isherwood]]. The drama stars [[Colin Firth]] as an LA-based college professor who is gay, alongside [[Julianne Moore]], [[Nicholas Hoult]] and [[Matthew Goode]].
