According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city had a total area of 11.09 square miles (28.72&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>), including 5.82 square miles (15.08&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>) of land and 5.27 square miles (13.64&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup>) of water (47.50%).<ref name=CensusArea/><ref name=GR1 /><!--DO NOT USE TEMPLATE TO CONVERT English into metric units for these areas since the English and the metric units are reported directly from NJ Gazetteer citation source.-->

The city is located on a peninsula that was earlier known as [[Bergen Neck]].
