By 1991, the year the [[Dissolution of the Soviet Union|Soviet Union dissolved]], the city's population had grown to approximately 2,136,600. Tashkent was the fourth most populated city in the former [[Soviet Union|USSR]], after [[Moscow]], Leningrad ([[St. Petersburg]]), and [[Kyiv]]. Nowadays, Tashkent remains the fourth most populous city in the CIS.
