==Geography== Mount Shasta is located at 41°18'52" North, 122°18'41" West (41.314542, -122.311510), along Interstate 5 south of Weed and north of Dunsmuir, California. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 sqmi, of which 3.8 sqmi is land and only 0.10% of it is covered by water. The area hydrology consists of an unnamed stream in the south part of town which joins Big Springs Creek, which then flows south as Cold Creek to join the headwaters of the South Fork of the Sacramento River. The typical depth to groundwater is quite shallow in the predominant alluvium. The settlement is on the distal gently sloping southwest flanks of Mount Shasta, with the chief surficial soils being Quaternary alluvium. This alluvium is adjacent to and probably underlain by volcanic clastic rock deposited by Mount Shasta in the course of its development. Groundwater elevation is approximately at the elevation of the underlying native black peat soil. Where it occurs this peat, of approximately two feet thickness, is underlain by stream deposit sands and gravels. === Climate === Mount Shasta to the east forces moisture out of the air as it rises and cools, and the dip in the Klamath Mountains allows more moisture to reach inland, so the city receives more precipitation than the semiarid region to the north. This means that in the winter, the city gets nearly 103 in of snowfall despite its low 3600 ft elevation. Other towns in the region get much less snow, for example Yreka averages only 11.8 in, and much cooler Klamath Falls only 35.9 in. The Köppen climate classification is Csb, or warm-summer Mediterranean climate. It can be very warm and cold according to the Californian summer anex. The USDA hardiness zone is 7b. The record high temperature was 106 F on July 29, 2022, and the record low temperature was -13 on December 22, 1990. The wettest “rain year” was from July 1997 to June 1998 with 76.24 in and the driest from July 1976 to June 1977 with 13.06 in. The most rainfall in one month was 27.48 in in January 1995, including 5.97 in on January 9. The most snowfall in one year was 349.6 in in 1952, including 137.7 in in January 1952. The most snow on the ground was 52 in on December 31, 1992. {{Weather box |location = Mount Shasta, California, 1991–2020 normals, extremes 1948–present |single line = Yes |Jan record high F = 68 |Feb record high F = 71 |Mar record high F = 80 |Apr record high F = 87 |May record high F = 96 |Jun record high F = 103 |Jul record high F = 106 |Aug record high F = 105 |Sep record high F = 103 |Oct record high F = 93 |Nov record high F = 80 |Dec record high F = 72 |year record high F = |Jan avg record high F = 58.5 |Feb avg record high F = 62.3 |Mar avg record high F = 69.5 |Apr avg record high F = 77.2 |May avg record high F = 86.0 |Jun avg record high F = 91.7 |Jul avg record high F = 96.3 |Aug avg record high F = 95.3 |Sep avg record high F = 91.5 |Oct avg record high F = 81.5 |Nov avg record high F = 67.6 |Dec avg record high F = 55.9 |year avg record high F = 97.5 |Jan high F = 44.4 |Feb high F = 47.6 |Mar high F = 52.7 |Apr high F = 59.0 |May high F = 68.1 |Jun high F = 76.0 |Jul high F = 85.2 |Aug high F = 84.3 |Sep high F = 77.9 |Oct high F = 64.3 |Nov high F = 50.1 |Dec high F = 42.7 |year high F = |Jan mean F = 35.8 |Feb mean F = 37.9 |Mar mean F = 41.9 |Apr mean F = 46.5 |May mean F = 54.2 |Jun mean F = 61.1 |Jul mean F = 68.1 |Aug mean F = 66.8 |Sep mean F = 61.0 |Oct mean F = 50.9 |Nov mean F = 40.5 |Dec mean F = 34.8 |year mean F = |Jan low F = 27.2 |Feb low F = 28.1 |Mar low F = 31.0 |Apr low F = 34.1 |May low F = 40.4 |Jun low F = 46.2 |Jul low F = 51.0 |Aug low F = 49.4 |Sep low F = 44.2 |Oct low F = 37.5 |Nov low F = 30.9 |Dec low F = 26.9 |year low F = |Jan avg record low F = 15.1 |Feb avg record low F = 17.1 |Mar avg record low F = 20.7 |Apr avg record low F = 24.6 |May avg record low F = 30.1 |Jun avg record low F = 36.5 |Jul avg record low F = 42.5 |Aug avg record low F = 41.5 |Sep avg record low F = 34.4 |Oct avg record low F = 26.3 |Nov avg record low F = 18.1 |Dec avg record low F = 13.7 |year avg record low F = 9.9 |Jan record low F = -2 |Feb record low F = -3 |Mar record low F = 13 |Apr record low F = 14 |May record low F = 21 |Jun record low F = 25 |Jul record low F = 32 |Aug record low F = 34 |Sep record low F = 25 |Oct record low F = 17 |Nov record low F = 6 |Dec record low F = -13 |year record low F = |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 7.11 |Feb precipitation inch = 7.44 |Mar precipitation inch = 6.18 |Apr precipitation inch = 3.23 |May precipitation inch = 2.23 |Jun precipitation inch = 1.23 |Jul precipitation inch = 0.23 |Aug precipitation inch = 0.21 |Sep precipitation inch = 0.53 |Oct precipitation inch = 2.18 |Nov precipitation inch = 4.28 |Dec precipitation inch = 7.78 |year precipitation inch = |Jan snow inch = 18.2 |Feb snow inch = 20.3 |Mar snow inch = 11.0 |Apr snow inch = 5.4 |May snow inch = 0.3 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.0 |Oct snow inch = 0.2 |Nov snow inch = 7.8 |Dec snow inch = 26.1 |year snow inch = |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 13.2 |Feb precipitation days = 12.8 |Mar precipitation days = 13.2 |Apr precipitation days = 11.2 |May precipitation days = 9.0 |Jun precipitation days = 4.9 |Jul precipitation days = 1.8 |Aug precipitation days = 1.5 |Sep precipitation days = 2.7 |Oct precipitation days = 6.1 |Nov precipitation days = 10.8 |Dec precipitation days = 13.9 |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 6.3 |Feb snow days = 5.4 |Mar snow days = 4.3 |Apr snow days = 2.9 |May snow days = 0.2 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.0 |Oct snow days = 0.3 |Nov snow days = 2.9 |Dec snow days = 6.9 |source 1 = NOAA |source 2 = National Weather Service }}
