While serving in the US Army at nearby Fort Ord, Eastwood developed an interest in Carmel area real estate. In May 1968, Eastwood and actor James Garner bought {{convert|340|acre|ha|0}} of wooded land in Carmel Valley from the Howard Hattan estate for $640,000.
