According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of Template:Convert or 95.8 km2, of which approximately 95% is land and the rest is water.<ref>Minnesota 2000: Census of Population and Housing, p. 30 (U.S. Dept. of Commerce, 2000).</ref> The United States Forest Service describes Picket Lake as an area comprising 383 lake acres and 4097 acres of National Forest land.<ref>Chippewa and Superior National Forests (N.F.), Forest Plan Revision: Environmental Impact Statement, p. 65 (U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, 2003).</ref><ref name=rec>Template:Cite web</ref>

The closest town to the lake is Orr.<ref name=rec /> The Forest Service provides three backcountry campsites around the lake, and the parking lot is accessible via Forest Road 477.<ref name=rec />
