Chloe (Template:IPAc-en;<ref>Template:Cite web</ref> Template:LangxTemplate:Efn), also spelled Chloë, Chlöe, or Chloé, is a feminine name meaning "blooming" or "fertility" in Greek. The name ultimately derives, through Greek, from the Proto-Indo-European root Template:Lang, which relates to the colors yellow and green.<ref>Template:Cite web</ref>Template:Citation needed The common scientific prefix chloro- (e.g. chlorine and chloroplast) derives from the same Greek root. In Greek the word refers to the young, green foliage or shoots of plants in spring.

Template:Lang was one of the many epithets of the goddess Demeter.<ref>Template:LSJ</ref> The name appears in the New Testament, in 1 Corinthians 1:11 in the context of "the house of Chloe", a leading early Christian woman in Corinth, Greece.<ref>Template:Bibleverse</ref> The French spelling is Chloé.
