New Salem is a village in Pike County, Illinois, United States. The population was 136 at the 2000 census.

Demographics

The population density was Template:Convert. There were 67 housing units at an average density of Template:Convert. The racial makeup of the village was 99.26% White, 0.74% from other races.

There were 53 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 76.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $26,875. Males had a median income of $20,625 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,351.
