The main page learning project was launched after the redesign of the main page in December 2007. The main page learning project has as its goal "the promotion of responsible involvement of the Wikiversity community in an efficient, productive, open and inclusive maintenance of the Wikiversity main page as a flagship of the activity and values of the Wikiversity community". If you would like to get involved in the design of the main page, this is where to go.

If you have general comments about the main page, but you don't especially want to get involved in the main page project, then you can also leave comments on the talk page for the main page learning project.

If you wish to post something below, go ahead. It's a talk page. But you are more likely to get a response by going to the Colloquium, which is where the main talking at Wikiversity goes on! See you there.

News or no news?

If there isn't a steady stream of news, that section might be better off away from the main page. And some other sort of content rotation would be welcome. Sj 05:18, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Page layout problem (Safari for mac)

Hey, I'm using Safari and there is a problem with the layout of the page. The "Help" section overlaps with the footer of the page where we see the wiki sister projects. That's probably a css error (something like a "clear:both" missing somewhere). If someone has the permission to fix this, please do so. Thanks!

I tested the page on firefox for mac and it loads correctly. Leadtimpani 15:25, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Can you add arab language of Wikiuniversity in (In other languages) ? Greetings. -- Faycal.09 (talk) 08:46, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

This is the arab language version (wikiversity - الصفحة الرئيسية). Greetings. -- Faycal.09 (talk) 08:34, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Nice idea, that beta project is getting pretty good. I don't see a reason not to link to it. SJ+ 21:07, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Operation system for phones. Wikiversity Building Tools: Smart phones/Touch screens--Gaon Abhinava 04:08, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

In my opinion, iOS is the best smart phone operating system because it offers elegance and simple lifestyle.

Use the Tools, Learn anywhere as long as you have a phone, grow your mind.... and help build Wikiversity.--Gaon Abhinava 04:08, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

i've noticed that (at least) the icon links to other wikimedia projects at the bottom of the Wikiversity main page are not {{sec link auto|...}} type links, so someone using the https version of the projects gets directed back to the http version. This is a bug IMHO. The w:Template:sec link auto and its subtemplates should be copied here - there should hopefully be some efficient sysadmin way of doing that instead of requiring editors to do it by hand - i hope... i seem to remember copying these by hand for Wikibooks... Boud 08:23, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

It seems to be me who already did copy the template and its dependencies here :P. E.g. Template:Sec link auto links to the Wikipedia Minkowski space article. What is missing is to actually use these... Boud 18:57, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

main page layout borked

The layout of the main page seems to have broken - there is extra whitespace at the top, the text of 'welcome to wikiversity' is wrapping, and the lower-right side of the there-column layout is overflowing onto the bottommost div. A recent change perhaps? viewed in chrome. SJ+ 21:06, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Looks fine here, but I do believe the layout is fragile and can easily break across web browsers and window widths. I think the main page should be redesigned. -- darklama  12:50, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Youtube

Is it possible to add a link to a Youtube-movie? Which code should you use? Timboliu 11:50, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

You may add a link to any external page, as long as it is not globally blacklisted. (If it's blacklisted, the link may be whitelisted here, any custodian can help with that.) As to the kind of Youtube links that display a video image, I don't know. To add a link to a page, you may copy the URL from your browser bar and place it. It will automatically display as a link, using the full URL. However, if you want it to display instead with some text, place it after an open bracket ("["), then add a space, the text you want, and then a close bracket. ("]"). For example,
  • http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page
displays as http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page
  • [http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page]
displays as [1]
  • [http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page Our Main Page]
displays as Our Main Page

Suggestion for additional school

Hi, I am Aries Eroles. I am a seafarer by profession. I noticed that there is no school for Maritime studies. Would I add a new page of it? Or is it included in other schools? Aries Eroles (talk) 14:48, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Aries - Welcome. I think you should feel to go ahead and create Maritime studies and/or School:Maritime studies and/or Topic:Maritime studies - start wherever you like. Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 15:18, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

--Marie92 (talk) 22:35, 2 August 2012 (UTC)In this course we will be studying from the book: “Social Psychology – 11th Edition; by: Robert A Baron, Donn Byrne, and Nyla R. Branscombe.

In this first section we will cover: The definition of Social Psychology

                                                             Social Psychology Scientific in nature
                                                              Social Psychology’s focus
                                                              Cognitive Processes
                                                              Cultural Context

Then we will recap what we have learned.

The Definition

Some people believe that social psychology is merely common sense. Although many have this view-social psychology is a scientific field; in fact its definition is as follows, “the scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and cause of individual behavior and thought in social situations” (p. 6). What makes social psychology scientific in nature? The field is considered scientific because it has four core values that all scientific fields must adhere to in order to be considered as such. These include: “Accuracy, Objectivity, Skepticism, and Open-mindedness” (p. 8). These values are very important within the field and they are applied in order to receive a better understanding of “social behavior and social thought” (p.8).

Focus

Social psychology focuses on the behavior of individuals in social situations. The field also seeks to understand social behavior and thought (p.9). We may also be affected by others, for instance: You’re speeding on a highway and you see a state trooper pull over another driver in order to issue them a ticket-how would you react (p. 9). We are also affected by appearances. Have you ever felt uncomfortable because you have overdressed for an occasion or under dressed? “Do you ever behave differently toward a highly attractive person versus a less attractive one,” (p. 10)?

Cognitive Processes --Marie92 (talk) 22:35, 2 August 2012 (UTC) --Marie92 (talk) 22:35, 2 August 2012 (UTC)Cognitive processes plays a role as well, for instance, “if an individual makes plans with a friend but the friend is thirty minutes late and still has not arrived. The individual may begin to question their friends’ arrival. Once their friend arrives, and gives the excuse I am sorry I was late I forgot we had plans until a few minutes ago. What would be your reaction? What is the excuse is I was caught in traffic or there was construction on the road? Would you feel less annoyed? These questions may also be taken into account considering how often your friend is late when you make plans. In other words your reactions depend strongly on your memories of your friends past behavior and your inferences about whether her or his explanation is actually true. Situations such as these call attention to the fact that cognitive processes play a crucial role in social behavior and social thought. We are constantly trying to make sense of our social world as such questions as: Why do people react this way, why did I react that way, and what would I do if I were in that situation. These processes are often studied by social psychologist. Social cognition is one of the most important areas of research within the field (p. 11).”

Cultural Context

“Many television programs in the 1950’s and 60’s depicted a very exaggerated happy and whole life. It contained mom, dad, and children. Divorce was not an issue on these shows, although divorce existed during this time” (p 11). Divorce was less common during that time period. Today divorce continues to increase due to change in morals and values. We can also see how sexual views have changed. The old television programs showed a husband and wife in separate beds. Today a couple is shown lying in bed together despite their marital status. When we look at society many are living together before actually getting married, “therefore cultural factors strongly affect social behavior and thought,” (p. 12).

Recap - Social Psychology is a science - It focuses on understanding causes of social behavior and thought - It identifies factors that shape our feelings, behaviors, and thoughts in social situations (p. 14)
