Greetings all! I think we need to make the Main page more immediately visually accessible - in other words, what Wikiversity is and what you can do there. I'm not such a whizz at Mediawiki design, so I'd appreciate any help in making a better page layout. I can then help with adding and creating links.. == Page layout problem (Safari for mac) ==

I re-organized the layout of the main page. Done now.
Hey, I'm using Safari and there is a problem with the layout of the page. The "Help" section overlaps with the footer of the page where we see the wiki sister projects. That's probably a css error (something like a "clear:both" missing somewhere). If someone has the permission to fix this, please do so. Thanks!

To do (and "done" by various editors):
I tested the page on firefox for mac and it loads correctly. Leadtimpani 15:25, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
*edit the browse box (indent text -- remove rule line?)
*Done - changed "open-content" to "free-content". decide on whether to use "free-content" or "open-content" in several places on page
*Done - revise the links section (into 2 columns?).
*Done - "department" changed to "subject". while "department" is used on wikibooks in the same manner as on main page, is this the correct term? (department usually means something more specific like physics or anthropology) would "study areas" be better?

I don't understand, what is the difference between Wikiversity and Wikibooks? Under project proposal I learn, that it is about learning about a topic (Wikiversity) and reading about a topic (Wikibooks). But this "difference" seems a bit made-up to me. Wikibooks at the moment features the book wikibooks:Movie Making Manual. A how-to on movie making. What would be the difference to a course "film making" or "movie making" on Wikiversity? Okay, I see that a Wikiversity maybe would have a slightly other focus on some aspects, but is it useful to create two independant projects? I can't think, that this was not a topic already before, so please point me to the discussion (but if it is a typical endless wiki discussion, I would be happy if you could give an outline of the main arguments, that were crucial to the decide). --84.143.6.71 19:55, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

: The statement you quote reflects part of the mission of Wikiversity. Another major part of the mission is to create learning communitiesAs I understand it, Wikiversity projects can be partly based on Wikibooks in the same way that Wikibooks are sometimes partly based on Wikipedia articles. As to the kind of Youtube links that display a video image, I don't know. To add a link to a page, you may copy the URL from your browser bar and place it. It will automatically display as a link, using the full URL. However, if you want it to display instead with some text, place it after an open bracket ("["), then add a space, the text you want, and then a close bracket. ("]"). For example,

Wikiversity in korean

[edit]

Can you please add the korean wikiversity to "In other languages". It was already approved.

The main page learning project was launched after the redesign of the main page in December 2007. The main page learning project has as its goal "the promotion of responsible involvement of the Wikiversity community in an efficient, productive, open and inclusive maintenance of the Wikiversity main page as a flagship of the activity and values of the Wikiversity community". If you would like to get involved in the design of the main page, this is where to go.

If you have general comments about the main page, but you don't especially want to get involved in the main page project, then you can also leave comments on the talk page for the main page learning project.

If you wish to post something below, go ahead. It's a talk page. But you are more likely to get a response by going to the Colloquium, which is where the main talking at Wikiversity goes on! See you there.

A recent change perhaps? viewed in chrome. SJ+ 21:06, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Looks fine here, but I do believe the layout is fragile and can easily break across web browsers and window widths. I think the main page should be redesigned. -- darklama  12:50, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Youtube

[edit]

Is it possible to add a link to a Youtube-movie? Which code should you use? Timboliu 11:50, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

You may add a link to any external page, as long as it is not globally blacklisted. (If it's blacklisted, the link may be whitelisted here, any custodian can help with that.) As to the kind of Youtube links that display a video image, I don't know. To add a link to a page, you may copy the URL from your browser bar and place it. It will automatically display as a link, using the full URL. However, if you want it to display instead with some text, place it after an open bracket ("["), then add a space, the text you want, and then a close bracket. ("]"). For example,
  • http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page
displays as http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page
  •
displays as [1]
  • Our Main Page
displays as Our Main Page

Suggestion for additional school

[edit]

Hi, I am Aries Eroles. I am a seafarer by profession. I noticed that there is no school for Maritime studies. Would I add a new page of it? Or is it included in other schools? Aries Eroles (talk) 14:48, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Aries - Welcome. I think you should feel to go ahead and create Maritime studies and/or School:Maritime studies and/or Topic:Maritime studies - start wherever you like. Sincerely, James -- Jtneill - Talk - c 15:18, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
You may want to have a look into Topic:Maritime strategy, School:Strategic studies, Topic:War, and Topic:Peace studies -- darklama  16:16, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the day

The picture of major scales is not comprehensive. It should also have the "flat" keys like F major.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:30, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Probable typo on the main page

Under the community section, it says "you can join our Wikiversity's IRC channel" --- should it be "...join Wikiversity's IRC channel" or "...join our IRC channel" ? Kierkkadon (talk) 14:00, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Blocked

[edit]
File:Stop x nuvola.svg
Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will probably not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text Template:Tlx on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text Template:Tlx below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 22:24, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
