The House of Hanover was formally known as the Hanover branch of the House of Brunswick and Lunenburg and ruled as kings and queens of England from 1714 to 1901. Brunswick is the modern German city of Braunschweig, for which many places in the English speaking world were named because of the connection via the royal house.
