== History ==
Zearing was formed out of Lincoln Township, being founded on October 17, 1881, and incorporated on February 6, 1883. It was named for William Mitchell Zearing, a judge from [[Chicago]] who donated a bell to the first church in the community.{{citation needed|date=October 2021}}

There was a population density of 704 people per square mile, spread over 0.75 miles. Of those 528 people, the median age was 36.9 years, with 19.7% of the town's population under the age of 18, 60.2% between the ages of 18 and 64, and 20.1% of the population over the age of 65. There were a total of 231 households, with an average of 2.81 people per household.

57% of the town's population is male, with 43% of the population female. The racial makeup of the town was 93.75% White, less than 0.5% African American, 4.2% mixed race, and 1.51% Hispanic.

The average income per capita of Zearing was $24,001, which is lower than the state average, and the median household income was $54,861, 90% of the average for the rest of the state. 17% of the town lives under the poverty line, which is far higher than the rest of the state which has an average of 11%.

==Arts and culture==
The city celebrates Zearing Days Celebration festival during the last weekend in July. This celebration used to be held to commemorate Labor Day, but had not been put on since the 1980s, that was until 2000 when a group of Zearing residents decided to start the tradition again. Once started back up again, the first celebration – Just Horsin' Around – was titled in honor of the late Dick Sparrow's 40-horse hitch. This celebration was a one-day event in July that has now grown into a three-day event.
Zearing has a long history of other horse trainers other than the Sparrow family as well who have been a significant part of the town's culture and history. Zearing's facility houses the elementary learning center (grades K-4). The district's central office is based in [[Colo, Iowa|Colo]], as well as the district's high school (grades 5–12).
