Yorktown was [[plat]]ted in 1882 by C. E. Perkins. Yorktown lies 1½ hours' driving time from [[Omaha, Nebraska|Omaha]], 2½ hours from [[Des Moines, Iowa|Des Moines]], and three hours from [[Kansas City, Missouri|Kansas City]]. The city sits in the rolling hills of southwestern Iowa, about {{convert|10|mi|km}} from the [[Missouri]] border.
