The area that would become the town was first settled ''circa'' 1812. The town of Wirt was created in 1838 from parts of the towns of [[Bolivar, New York|Bolivar]] and [[Friendship, New York|Friendship]].

The racial makeup of the town was 97.94% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.33% [[African American (U.S. Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.08% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.25% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], none [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.49% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.91% from two or more races. None of the population are [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.
