C.C. Whitten,<ref>{{cite book | url=https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_Mk40AQAAMAAJ | title=History of Hardin County, Iowa | publisher=Union Publishing Company | year=1883 | pages=[https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_Mk40AQAAMAAJ/page/n921 965]}}</ref> an official for the Northwestern Railway System, platted the town in 1880.<ref>{{cite book | url=https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_mBw_AQAAMAAJ | title=Past and Present of Hardin County, Iowa | publisher=Unigraphic | author=Moir, William J. | year=1911 | pages=[https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_mBw_AQAAMAAJ/page/n357 354]}}</ref> Whitten was incorporated in 1882 with a population of 350. By 1914, Whitten was proud of its church membership of 170, its schools, three general stores, a blacksmith shop, restaurant, bank, produce house, implement store, and two doctors. In fact, Whitten was never without a doctor until 1973 when Dr. George Blaha died after serving the community for 60 years.

In the early 20th century, the city experienced several devastating fires which destroyed much of the town.  The city rebuilt very little.

The Whitten Renagades semi-pro baseball team, managed by James Speas, played for over 2 decades with their final season in 1996.

The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census|racial]] makeup of the city was 94.0% [[White Americans|White]], 0.0% [[African Americans|Black or African American]], 0.0% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 1.0% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.0% [[Pacific Islander Americans|Pacific Islander]], 2.0% from other races and 3.0% from two or more races. ==Education==
[[BCLUW Community School District]] operates public schools serving Whitten. The schools are BCLUW Elementary School in [[Conrad, Iowa|Conrad]], BCLUW Middle School in [[Union, Iowa|Union]], and [[BCLUW High School]] in Conrad.
