It is divided between the two counties by railroad tracks and is the northernmost town in the two counties. It is part of the [[Rocky Mount, North Carolina]] [[Rocky Mount metropolitan area|Metropolitan Statistical Area]]. The population was 744 in [[2010 United States census|2010]].

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 799 people, 331 households, and 219 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|977.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 370 housing units at an average density of {{convert|452.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 40.55% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 58.32% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.13% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.88% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.13% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.88% of the population.

There were 331 households, out of which 24.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 20.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
