==History==
In 1854, the [[Mobile and Ohio Railroad]] was built through [[Wayne County, Mississippi|Wayne County]], and Waynesboro Station was built about five miles north of [[Winchester, Mississippi|Winchester]]. The discovery of oil in Wayne County during the 1940s drove an economic and population boom.<ref name="WaynesboroHistory"/> In the 1940s, Waynesboro's population more than doubled, increasing from 1,445 residents in 1940 to 3,442 residents in 1950.<ref name="DecennialCensus"/>

Two radio stations are licensed to Waynesboro. [[WABO (AM)]] began broadcasting in 1954 and [[WABO-FM]] in 1973.

The racial makeup of the city was 41.54% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 57.28% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.21% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.37% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.25% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.35% from two or more races.
