The town is in the southeast quadrant of the county, north of the village of [[Wellsville (village), New York|Wellsville]].

== History ==
The first settler arrived around 1817. The town of Ward was created in 1856 from parts of the towns of [[Alfred, New York|Alfred]] and [[Amity, New York|Amity]].

The only significant community, Phillips Creek, was first settled between 1830 and 1835.

In the summer of 1838, a violent windstorm caused destruction of property and loss of life.

[[New York State Route 244|NY 244]] is a major east–west highway through the north part of the town.

The population density was {{convert|13.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 244 housing units at an average density of {{convert|8.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 97.69% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.03% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]] and 1.28% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]].

There were 133 households, out of which 41.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.8% were non-families. 14.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 30.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 98.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,750, and the median income for a family was $41,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $22,292 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $15,271. About 12.9% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 16.7% of those under age 18 and 2.6% of those age 65 or over.
