'''Wamac''' is a city in [[Washington County, Illinois|Washington]], [[Marion County, Illinois|Marion]], and [[Clinton County, Illinois|Clinton]] counties in the [[U.S. state]] of [[Illinois]]. The population was 985 at the 2020 census,<ref name="Census 2020"/> down from 1,185 in 2010. Incorporated as a city on July 25, 1916, Wamac derives its name from the three counties.

==Geography==
The city is mainly in the northeast corner of Washington County and the southwest corner of Marion County, with a small portion in the southeast corner of Clinton County. It is bordered to the north and east by [[Centralia, Illinois|Centralia]]. [[U.S. Route 51]] passes just east of Wamac, leading north to the center of Centralia and south {{convert|38|mi}} to [[Du Quoin, Illinois|Du Quoin]].

According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Wamac has a total area of {{convert|1.43|sqmi|km2|2}}, of which {{convert|1.42|sqmi|km2|2}} (or 99.23%) are land and {{convert|0.01|sqmi|km2|2}} (or 0.77%) are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/> Fulton Branch passes through the south side of the city, flowing west to Sewer Creek, part of the [[Crooked Creek (Illinois)|Crooked Creek]] watershed flowing west to the [[Kaskaskia River]].

The population density was {{Convert|690.74|PD/sqmi|PD/km2}}. There were 478 housing units at an average density of {{Convert|335.20|/sqmi|/km2}}. The racial makeup of the city was 86.09% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 4.16% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.30% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.30% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.10% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.42% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 7.61% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 3.55% of the population.

There were 503 households, out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.42% were married couples living together, 19.09% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.80% were non-families. 26.84% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.96% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 2.43.

The city's age distribution consisted of 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 28% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33.9 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,625, and the median income for a family was $34,286. Males had a median income of $24,043 versus $25,250 for females.
