Walnut is located west of [[Corinth, Mississippi|Corinth]] at the intersection of [[U.S. Route 72 in Mississippi|U.S. Route 72]] and [[Mississippi Highway 15]]. The town's older business district is concentrated along [[Mississippi Highway 354]], just east of its intersection with MS 15. The town lies just a few miles south of the Mississippi-[[Tennessee]] state line, and is located roughly equidistant between [[Memphis, Tennessee|Memphis]] and [[Florence–Muscle Shoals metropolitan area|The Shoals]] in [[Alabama]].

The population density was {{convert|139.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 341 housing units at an average density of {{convert|62.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 84.48% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 14.46% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.27% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.13% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.66% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.66% of the population.
