It is named after and located at the foot of a [[butte]] called Wagon Mound, which was a landmark for covered wagon trains and traders going up and down the Santa Fe Trail and is now [[Wagon Mound National Historic Landmark]]. The village, with brightly painted houses and several stores and shops, is located on the plains of northeastern New Mexico. [[Interstate 25 in New Mexico|Interstate 25]], which skirts the western side of town, gives a view of the majority of the town. In the village, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. The median income for a household in the village was $17,273, and the median income for a family was $21,667. Males had a median income of $20,357 versus $16,964 for females.
