==History==
Varnville was founded by the Varn Brothers, who sold the [[Right-of-way (property access)|right-of-way]] for railroad tracks through their sawmill in 1872, prior to Hampton County's founding.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.varnville.org/History.html |title=History |website=www.varnville.org |url-status=usurped |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20000817042214/http://www.varnville.org/History.html |archive-date=August 17, 2000}}</ref> In 1878, Hampton County was created from [[Beaufort County, South Carolina|Beaufort County]], and the site for the county seat was located {{convert|3|mi|0}} northwest of Varnville, eventually becoming the town of Hampton. Varnville grew as a result of its close proximity to the county seat as well as its connections with surrounding agricultural areas. In 1993, several scenes from the film ''[[Forrest Gump]]'' were shot in Varnville, of which some were used to create the fictional town of Greenbow, Alabama.

The [[Hattie J. Peeples House]] was listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in 1992.<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|version=2010a}}</ref>

==Geography==

[[U.S. Route 278]] (Carolina Avenue) is the main street through the town, leading northwest into Hampton (where it becomes Elm Street) and south {{convert|28|mi}} to [[Ridgeland, South Carolina|Ridgeland]]. [[South Carolina Highway 63]] leads east from Varnville {{convert|27|mi}} to [[Walterboro, South Carolina|Walterboro]]. [[Yemassee, South Carolina|Yemassee]] is {{convert|17|mi}} to the southeast via US 278 and [[South Carolina Highway 68|SC 68]].

As of the [[2020 United States census]], there were 1,669 people, 728 households, and 401 families residing in the town.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 2,074 people, 795 households, and 539 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|548.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 878 housing units at an average density of {{convert|232.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 60.32% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 38.72% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.24% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.05% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.10% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.58% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.72% of the population.

There were 795 households, out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 21.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 29.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,357, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $33,750 versus $23,920 for females. ==Education==
Public education is provided by the Hampton County School District 1. Students attend Varnville Elementary School, North District Middle School, and [[Wade Hampton High School (Varnville, South Carolina)|Wade Hampton High School]], all of which are located in Varnville proper. Patrick Henry Academy, located four miles west of Varnville, is the main private school in Hampton County.  Varnville also is home to a branch of the [[Technical College of the Lowcountry]] for higher education.
