Settled in approximately 1801 as '''Bridge's Plantation''', it was incorporated as the '''Town of Kingville''' on February 22, 1812. Troy is served by [[U.S. Route 202 in Maine|U.S. Route 202]] and [[Maine State Route 220]]. It is bordered by [[Detroit, Maine|Detroit]] and [[Plymouth, Maine|Plymouth]] on the north, [[Dixmont, Maine|Dixmont]] on the east, [[Jackson, Maine|Jackson]] on the southeast, [[Thorndike, Maine|Thorndike]] on the south, [[Unity, Maine|Unity]] on the southwest and [[Burnham, Maine|Burnham]] on the west.

The [[population density]] was {{convert|29.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 476 housing units at an average density of {{convert|13.6|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the town was 95.6% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.4% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.2% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.2% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 3.6% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.6% of the population.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.40% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.83% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.31% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 1.45% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.10% of the population.

The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,052, and the median income for a family was $34,375. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $21,438 for females. About 8.3% of families and 13.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 21.7% of those under age 18 and 7.9% of those age 65 or over.
