== History ==

The first settler arrived in 1805.

The town was formed (as "Troupsburgh") from the Towns of [[Canisteo (town), New York|Canisteo]] and [[Addison (town), New York|Addison]] on February 12, 1808.

The Honorable Colonel Robert Troup, Esq. served in the [[American Revolutionary War|American Revolution]] in addition to being a federal judge and later land agent for the Pulteney Estate.  The Pulteney Estate was a large tract of land stretching from [[Sodus Bay]] on [[Lake Ontario]] south to the [[Pennsylvania]] border.  Its western border was the [[Genesee River]] and its eastern border was [[Seneca Lake (New York)|Seneca Lake]].  Troup took over as land agent for the Pulteney Estate after its first agent, Charles Williamson, fell out of favor with the estate owners due to large debts he incurred in an attempt to develop the land.

Additional territory was added to Troupsburg from Canisteo in 1818.
  
Troupsburg was subsequently diminished by contributing land to the Towns of [[Greenwood, New York|Greenwood]], [[New York (state)|New York]] and [[Jasper, New York|Jasper]] in 1827, and again to aid the formation of the [[Woodhull, New York|Town of Woodhull]] in 1828.

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|61.3|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|61.2|sqmi|km2}}  is land and 0.02% is water.

The southern  town line is the border with [[Pennsylvania]] ([[Tioga County, Pennsylvania|Tioga County]]).  The town is known for higher elevation than other towns in the county.

[[New York State Route 36]] is a north-south highway in the town.

The population density was {{convert|18.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 497 housing units at an average density of {{convert|8.1|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.87% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.18% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.62% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.15% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.18% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.24% of the population.

There were 380 households, out of which 38.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 20.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.46.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 32.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.5 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,714, and the median income for a family was $37,159. Males had a median income of $25,761 versus $21,250 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $11,982.  About 14.3% of families and 19.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 26.3% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.
