Toms River Township and its fully contained census-designated place are not co-extensive. In addition to the census-designated place, which includes all of mainland Toms River Township and is home to the vast majority of the township's population, Toms River Township includes two small CDPs: [[Dover Beaches North, New Jersey|Dover Beaches North]] (2020 Census population of 1,277) and [[Dover Beaches South, New Jersey|Dover Beaches South]] (1,331), both of which are located on the [[Barnegat Peninsula]]. ===2010 census===
The [[2010 United States census]] counted 88,791 people, 33,394 households, and 23,643 families in the CDP. The [[population density]] was {{convert|2279.8|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|people&nbsp;|people|}}. There were 36,605 housing units at an average density of {{convert|939.9|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup was 89.71% (79,653) [[White (U.S. census)|White]], 2.77% (2,459) [[Black (U.S. census)|Black or African American]], 0.17% (151) [[Native American (U.S. census)|Native American]], 3.67% (3,260) [[Asian (U.S. census)|Asian]], 0.02% (17) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.98% (1,760) from [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census#Race|other races]], and 1.68% (1,491) from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. census)|Hispanic or Latino]] of any race were 8.04% (7,136) of the population.<ref name=Census2010/>

Of the 33,394 households, 29.0% had children under the age of 18; 54.9% were married couples living together; 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present and 29.2% were non-families. Of all households, 24.3% were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.12.<ref name=Census2010/>

21.7% of the population were under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 29.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42.5 years. For every 100 females, the population had 92.4 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 89.6 males.<ref name=Census2010/>

There were 31,674 households, out of which 32.3% had children under the living with them, 60.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.11.<ref name=Census2000/>

In the CDP the population was spread out, with 23.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.0 males.<ref name=Census2000/>

The median income for a household in the CDP was $55,659, and the median income for a family was $62,971. Males had a median income of $47,448 versus $30,763 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the CDP was $24,831. 5.6% of the population and 4.0% of families were below the [[poverty line]]. 6.6% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.<ref name=Census2000/>
