The area that became Thompson was initially inhabited by bands of the Munsee [[Lenape]] Native Americans. The population density was {{convert|168.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 9,258 housing units at an average density of {{convert|110.1|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 73.70% [[White (U.S. Census)|white]], 16.94% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.18% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.85% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.03% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 4.64% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.67% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 14.56% of the population.

There were 5,543 households, out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,511, and the median income for a family was $41,043. Males had a median income of $37,759 versus $26,692 for females. About 18.3% of families and 23.3% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 34.9% of those under age 18 and 13.4% of those age 65 or over.
