== History ==
The first settlement began around 1794, after the end of the [[American Revolution]].

Summit was created in 1819 from parts of the Towns of [[Jefferson, New York|Jefferson]] and [[Cobleskill (town), New York|Cobleskill]].

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|37.5|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|37.1|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.3|sqmi|km2}}  (0.91%) is water.

Mount Wharton in Summit is the highest location (approximately 2400 feet) in Schoharie County.  The mountain is named after the land owner of the property.  '''Charlotte Creek''', a tributary of the [[Susquehanna River]], flows southwestward from the town.

The western town line is the border of [[Otsego County, New York|Otsego County]].

[[New York State Route 10]] is a north-south highway.

The population density was {{convert|30.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 879 housing units at an average density of {{convert|23.7|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.15% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.25% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.18% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.27% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.09% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.36% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.71% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.07% of the population.

There were 459 households, out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.83.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 31.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 105.3 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,386, and the median income for a family was $40,139. Males had a median income of $32,279 versus $24,792 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $16,778.  About 10.9% of families and 15.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 22.8% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.
