This event, during the 1936 North American heat wave, is even more remarkable because since 1948, the temperature has not exceeded 109 F. It was the highest temperature recorded so far north on the North American continent until June 29, 2021, when it was exceeded in Lytton, British Columbia by 0.3 Β°F (0.2 Β°C). A prolonged period of extreme drought across the entire Great Plains contributed to the extreme heat. Record high temperatures for 15 states fell that summer. In the United States, higher temperatures have been recorded in only four states: California, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. (Kansas set its own 121 Β°F record on July 24.) According to the averages, Steele has a humid continental climate (Dfb) with warm to hot summers and very cold winters, typical of the Great Plains. Though summer's highs average 83 F there are still 17β18 days on average of above 90 F. January nights average 2 F, and subzero temperatures happen on multiple occasions every winter. {{Weather box |location = Steele, North Dakota (1991β2020 normals, extremes 1894βpresent) |single line = Y |Jan record high F = 55 |Feb record high F = 64 |Mar record high F = 80 |Apr record high F = 95 |May record high F = 110 |Jun record high F = 109 |Jul record high F = 121 |Aug record high F = 106 |Sep record high F = 105 |Oct record high F = 95 |Nov record high F = 76 |Dec record high F = 67 |year record high F = 121 |Jan high F = 20.5 |Feb high F = 24.9 |Mar high F = 38.0 |Apr high F = 54.5 |May high F = 67.3 |Jun high F = 75.8 |Jul high F = 81.8 |Aug high F = 81.2 |Sep high F = 72.0 |Oct high F = 56.1 |Nov high F = 38.8 |Dec high F = 25.0 |year high F = 53.0 |Jan mean F = 10.9 |Feb mean F = 15.2 |Mar mean F = 27.7 |Apr mean F = 41.9 |May mean F = 54.3 |Jun mean F = 63.9 |Jul mean F = 69.4 |Aug mean F = 67.8 |Sep mean F = 58.8 |Oct mean F = 44.3 |Nov mean F = 28.8 |Dec mean F = 16.3 |year mean F = 41.6 |Jan low F = 1.4 |Feb low F = 5.5 |Mar low F = 17.5 |Apr low F = 29.4 |May low F = 41.4 |Jun low F = 52.0 |Jul low F = 56.9 |Aug low F = 54.5 |Sep low F = 45.6 |Oct low F = 32.4 |Nov low F = 18.9 |Dec low F = 7.5 |year low F = 30.2 |Jan record low F = β44 |Feb record low F = β50 |Mar record low F = β35 |Apr record low F = β7 |May record low F = 11 |Jun record low F = 26 |Jul record low F = 32 |Aug record low F = 26 |Sep record low F = 10 |Oct record low F = β12 |Nov record low F = β25 |Dec record low F = β42 |year record low F = β50 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 0.63 |Feb precipitation inch = 0.61 |Mar precipitation inch = 0.95 |Apr precipitation inch = 1.41 |May precipitation inch = 2.81 |Jun precipitation inch = 3.43 |Jul precipitation inch = 3.36 |Aug precipitation inch = 2.57 |Sep precipitation inch = 2.12 |Oct precipitation inch = 1.81 |Nov precipitation inch = 0.86 |Dec precipitation inch = 0.80 |year precipitation inch = 21.36 |Jan snow inch = 8.5 |Feb snow inch = 5.6 |Mar snow inch = 7.9 |Apr snow inch = 2.0 |May snow inch = 0.1 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.0 |Oct snow inch = 0.8 |Nov snow inch = 6.2 |Dec snow inch = 9.0 |year snow inch = 40.1 |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 5.5 |Feb precipitation days = 4.6 |Mar precipitation days = 5.1 |Apr precipitation days = 7.1 |May precipitation days = 10.4 |Jun precipitation days = 11.1 |Jul precipitation days = 9.9 |Aug precipitation days = 7.5 |Sep precipitation days = 7.3 |Oct precipitation days = 6.9 |Nov precipitation days = 5.4 |Dec precipitation days = 5.7 |year precipitation days = 86.5 |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 4.9 |Feb snow days = 3.3 |Mar snow days = 2.9 |Apr snow days = 1.0 |May snow days = 0.1 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.0 |Oct snow days = 0.8 |Nov snow days = 2.3 |Dec snow days = 4.4 |year snow days = 19.7 |source 1 = NOAA (snow 1981β2010)<ref name= NOAA>{{cite web | url = https://www.weather.gov/wrh/Climate?wfo=bis | title = NowData -
