Stanford was first settled ''circa'' 1750.  The town was part of the [[Great Nine Partners Patent]] of 1697.  The town of Stanford was formed in 1793 from the town of [[Washington, New York|Washington]].

The population density was {{convert|70.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,712 housing units at an average density of {{convert|34.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 94.95% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.52% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.20% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.10% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.03% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.82% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.38% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.65% of the population.

There were 1,398 households, out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 102.7 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $54,118, and the median income for a family was $62,171. Males had a median income of $40,746 versus $30,625 for females.
