Stafford is one of only two interior towns in Genesee County, lying in the east central part of the county, east of [[Batavia, New York|Batavia]].

== History ==
The town was first settled in 1798, one of the first of the towns in the [[Holland Purchase]] to be occupied. Stafford was formed in 1820 from parts of the towns of [[Batavia (town), New York|Batavia]] and [[Le Roy, New York|Le Roy]]. Part of Stafford was taken to form the town of [[Pavilion, New York|Pavilion]] in 1842. The historic core at the hamlet of Stafford was listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] as the [[Stafford Village Four Corners Historic District]] in 1985.<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|2009a}}</ref>

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|31.2|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|31.1|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|0.1|sqmi|km2}}, or 0.35%, is water.

The [[New York State Thruway]] ([[Interstate 90 in New York|Interstate 90]]) runs through the northern part of the town. The southern terminus of [[New York State Route 237]] is at [[New York State Route 5]] in Stafford. [[New York State Route 33]] crosses the northern part of the town, intersecting NY-237 north of the Thruway.

[[Oatka Creek]], Black Creek, and Bigelow Creek cross the town.

The population density was {{convert|77.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 997 housing units at an average density of {{convert|32.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 97.72% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.08% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.33% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.17% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.08% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.12% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.50% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.25% of the population.

There were 909 households, out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% were non-families. 18.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $49,516, and the median income for a family was $54,667. Males had a median income of $35,548 versus $24,375 for females. About 3.0% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 2.1% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.
