==Geography==
The township is in southwestern Cumberland County, extending from the [[Cumberland Valley]] in the north to [[South Mountain (Maryland and Pennsylvania)|South Mountain]] in the south. It includes the unincorporated community of Walnut Bottom along [[Yellow Breeches Creek]] in the north.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|29.5|sqkm|order=flip}}, of which {{convert|29.3|sqkm|order=flip}} is land and {{convert|0.2|sqkm|order=flip|2}}, or 0.62%, is water.<ref name="Census 2010"/>

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=January 31, 2008|title=U.S. Census website}}</ref> of 2000, there were 1,290 people, 455 households, and 359 families residing in the township.  The population density was {{convert|116.3|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 480 housing units at an average density of {{convert|43.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the township was 99.07% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.23% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.16% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.31% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.08% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.16% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.47% of the population.

There were 455 households, out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% were non-families. 17.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.25.

In the township the population was spread out, with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.1 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $45,952, and the median income for a family was $53,750. Males had a median income of $35,313 versus $24,076 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the township was $17,782.  About 4.7% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 10.8% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
