==Geography==
South Jacksonville is in central Morgan County and is bordered to the north by the city of [[Jacksonville, Illinois|Jacksonville]], the [[county seat]]. [[Illinois Route 267]] (Main Street) runs through the village center, leading north as Jacksonville's Main Street {{convert|2|mi|0}} to the city center and south {{convert|6|mi|0}} to [[Woodson, Illinois|Woodson]]. The [[Interstate 72]]/[[U.S. Route 36]] freeway runs along the southern edge of the village, with access from Exit 64 (IL 267). I-72/US-36 leads east {{convert|35|mi}} to [[Springfield, Illinois|Springfield]], the state capital, and west {{Convert|64|mi}} to [[Hannibal, Missouri]].

According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], South Jacksonville has a total area of {{convert|2.32|sqmi|sqkm|2}}, of which {{convert|0.05|sqmi|sqkm|2}}, or 2.29%, are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/> Mauvaise Terre Creek flows northward through the east side of the village, passing through Mauvaise Terre Lake, a reservoir. The creek is a tributary of the [[Illinois River]].

The population density was {{convert|2,102.3|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,648 housing units at an average density of {{convert|997.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the village was 97.32% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.04% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.17% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.66% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.20% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.60% from two or more races. There were 1,584 households, out of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the village, the population was spread out, with 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 81.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $37,548, and the median income for a family was $46,373. Males had a median income of $31,827 versus $26,750 for females.
