The town was named to honor Lieutenant Robert Somerville, who was killed in 1814 during the [[Battle of Horseshoe Bend (1814)|Battle of Horseshoe Bend]] in central Alabama while serving under General [[Andrew Jackson]].<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20080803213638/http://www.fayettecountychamber.net/Towns/Somerville.htm] </ref> Somerville was incorporated in 1836.

==Geography==

Downtown [[Memphis, Tennessee|Memphis]] is {{convert|41|mi}} to the west. [[Tennessee State Route 76]] crosses US 64 at the center of town. North of US 64, it is the town's Main Street and leads {{Convert|26|mi}} to [[Brownsville, Tennessee|Brownsville]]. To the south it is South Street, leading {{convert|13|mi}} to [[Moscow, Tennessee|Moscow]].

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|11.4|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|11.2|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|0.2|sqmi|km2}} (1.58%) is water. The [[Loosahatchie River]], a west-flowing tributary of the [[Mississippi River|Mississippi]], runs past the northern end of the town.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 2,519 people, 1,006 households, and 618 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|225.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,070 housing units at an average density of {{convert|95.8|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 59.94% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 39.38% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.08% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.08% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.04% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.48% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.24% of the population.

There were 1,006 households, out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 19.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
