== History ==
The land was first settled around 1797. The town of Smithville was founded from part of the town of [[Greene, New York|Greene]] in 1808.

The population of Smithville in 1865 was 1,634.

The [[Smithville Valley Grange No. 1397]] was listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in 1998.<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|2009a}}</ref>

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|131.9|km2|disp=flip}}, of which {{convert|130.7|km2|disp=flip}} is land and {{convert|1.2|km2|disp=flip}}, or 0.94%, is water.<ref name="Census 2010"/>

The western town line is the border of [[Broome County, New York|Broome]] and [[Cortland County, New York|Cortland counties]].

[[New York State Route 41]] intersects [[New York State Route 220]] north of Smithville Flats.

The population density was {{convert|26.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 672 housing units at an average density of {{convert|13.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.62% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.52% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.30% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.30% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.07% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.19% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.89% of the population.

There were 492 households, out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% were non-families. 18.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 111.5 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,972, and the median income for a family was $37,361. Males had a median income of $28,867 versus $24,063 for females.
