'''Smithfield''' is a [[Administrative divisions of New York#Town|town]] in [[Madison County, New York|Madison County]], [[New York (state)|New York]], United States. Administrative offices are in the hamlet of [[Peterboro, New York|Peterboro]]. The town is named after Peter Smith, an original land owner. As of the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]], the population was 1,127,<ref name="Census 2020"/> down from 1,288 in [[2010 United States census|2010]].

The region was first settled around 1797. The town was organized in 1807 from land taken from the town of [[Cazenovia, New York|Cazenovia]].

=== 2014 tornado ===

At 7:02&nbsp;p.m. on July 8, 2014, Smithfield was struck by an [[Enhanced Fujita Scale|EF2]] tornado with peak estimated winds of {{convert|135|mph|km/h|abbr=on}}. The tornado killed four people and destroyed several homes. One house was carried {{convert|150|yd|m}} and thrown into another home. ==Geography==
Smithfield is in central Madison County, {{convert|5|mi|0}} north of [[Morrisville, New York|Morrisville]], {{convert|9|mi|0}} northeast of [[Cazenovia (village), New York|Cazenovia]], and {{convert|11|mi|0}} south of [[Oneida, New York|Oneida]].

According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|24.5|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|24.4|sqmi|km2}} are land and {{convert|0.1|sqmi|1}}, or 0.35% are water.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2024"/> [[Oneida Creek]] rises in the center of the town and flows east and north toward [[Oneida Lake]]. Cowaselon Creek, a separate tributary of Oneida Lake, drains the northeastern part of the town. Morrisville Swamp, on the southern border of the town, drains south into the headwaters of the [[Chenango River]], part of the [[Susquehanna River]] watershed.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=January 31, 2008|title=U.S. Census website}}</ref> of 2000, there were 1,205 people, 415 households, and 315 families residing in the town.  The population density was {{convert|49.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 446 housing units at an average density of {{convert|18.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 96.68% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 1.00% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.83% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.25% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 1.24% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.25% of the population.

There were 415 households, out of which 42.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.25.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 31.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,109, and the median income for a family was $38,333. Males had a median income of $28,618 versus $23,125 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $14,860.  About 12.6% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 16.8% of those age 65 or over.
