In contrast to the Shoshone Native American tribe for which it is named, the city's name is correctly pronounced "Show-shown", with a silent "e". == History == Founded in 1882 during the construction of the Oregon Short Line, Shoshone has long been considered the main railroad station in south central Idaho's Magic Valley region. The much larger community of Twin Falls 26 mi to the south never developed a strong railroad presence due to the logistical issues presented by its location south of the Snake River Canyon. For many years, Shoshone was the only Amtrak stop in south central Idaho. The Union Pacific Railroad opened the Sun Valley resort in 1936 (and owned it until 1964), and its pre-existing spur route to Ketchum connected here. The spur first headed northeast, following today's US 93, to Richfield and Tikura, then peeled northwest to Picabo and on to Bellevue, Hailey, and Ketchum, so the distance was greater than today's more direct 55 mi drive north on Highway 75. About 15 mi north of Shoshone are the Shoshone Ice Caves. The caves are lava tubes that stay cool enough for the ice inside them to remain frozen throughout the summer. In the days before refrigeration, this feature, coupled with the railroad, made Shoshone popular with travelers as "the only place for hundreds of miles where one could get a cold beer." == Economy == Today, Shoshone still has one bar, but also boasts a cafe, a movie theater, and a grocery store—unusual for such a small town. While limited retail jobs exist, Shoshone is primarily a farming and dairy community. Shoshone is home to a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) facility. The town also has a small medical clinic, and recently built a new K-12 school building. In recent years, Shoshone has become a bedroom community for workers of neighboring Blaine County, due to a significant difference in cost of living. The resort cities of Ketchum and Sun Valley are about an hour north on Highway 75. This commuting phenomenon has contributed greatly to recent growth in the Shoshone area. Shoshone also has a few historical buildings. ==Geography== According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.16 sqmi, of which, 1.14 sqmi is land and 0.02 sqmi is water. The Little Wood River runs through the town. Much of the land around Shoshone is lava rock, which can make excavation for building problematic, and limits the amount of useful farmland. === Climate === Under the Köppen climate classification, Shoshone has a cold semi-arid climate (BSk). {{Weather box |location = Shoshone, Idaho, 1991–2020 normals, extremes 1908–present |single line = Yes |collapsed = Yes |Jan record high F = 60 |Feb record high F = 65 |Mar record high F = 79 |Apr record high F = 90 |May record high F = 101 |Jun record high F = 105 |Jul record high F = 109 |Aug record high F = 105 |Sep record high F = 104 |Oct record high F = 93 |Nov record high F = 77 |Dec record high F = 67 |Jan avg record high F = 45.6 |Feb avg record high F = 52.6 |Mar avg record high F = 67.3 |Apr avg record high F = 78.5 |May avg record high F = 88.5 |Jun avg record high F = 96.3 |Jul avg record high F = 102.4 |Aug avg record high F = 100.4 |Sep avg record high F = 93.4 |Oct avg record high F = 81.3 |Nov avg record high F = 63.4 |Dec avg record high F = 48.1 |year avg record high F = 103.0 |Jan high F = 37.2 |Feb high F = 43.0 |Mar high F = 54.5 |Apr high F = 63.5 |May high F = 73.8 |Jun high F = 84.0 |Jul high F = 94.1 |Aug high F = 92.4 |Sep high F = 81.4 |Oct high F = 65.9 |Nov high F = 49.5 |Dec high F = 37.7 |year high F = |Jan mean F = 30.2 |Feb mean F = 34.6 |Mar mean F = 43.6 |Apr mean F = 50.8 |May mean F = 60.2 |Jun mean F = 68.8 |Jul mean F = 77.9 |Aug mean F = 76.2 |Sep mean F = 66.1 |Oct mean F = 53.1 |Nov mean F = 40.3 |Dec mean F = 30.7 |year mean F = |Jan low F = 23.3 |Feb low F = 26.1 |Mar low F = 32.7 |Apr low F = 38.2 |May low F = 46.7 |Jun low F = 53.5 |Jul low F = 61.7 |Aug low F = 59.9 |Sep low F = 50.9 |Oct low F = 40.2 |Nov low F = 31.1 |Dec low F = 23.8 |year low F = |Jan avg record low F = 1.5 |Feb avg record low F = 6.8 |Mar avg record low F = 15.4 |Apr avg record low F = 22.3 |May avg record low F = 29.9 |Jun avg record low F = 36.9 |Jul avg record low F = 46.6 |Aug avg record low F = 44.6 |Sep avg record low F = 33.8 |Oct avg record low F = 22.1 |Nov avg record low F = 11.5 |Dec avg record low F = 2.6 |year avg record low F = -3.4 |Jan record low F = -36 |Feb record low F = -35 |Mar record low F = -11 |Apr record low F = 1 |May record low F = 15 |Jun record low F = 27 |Jul record low F = 32 |Aug record low F = 29 |Sep record low F = 16 |Oct record low F = 8 |Nov record low F = -20 |Dec record low F = -27 |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation inch = 1.57 |Feb precipitation inch = 0.90 |Mar precipitation inch = 1.14 |Apr precipitation inch = 0.81 |May precipitation inch = 1.07 |Jun precipitation inch = 0.56 |Jul precipitation inch = 0.16 |Aug precipitation inch = 0.30 |Sep precipitation inch = 0.46 |Oct precipitation inch = 0.76 |Nov precipitation inch = 1.02 |Dec precipitation inch = 1.72 |year precipitation inch = |unit precipitation days = 0.01 in |Jan precipitation days = 7.8 |Feb precipitation days = 6.5 |Mar precipitation days = 6.7 |Apr precipitation days = 6.7 |May precipitation days = 5.8 |Jun precipitation days = 3.7 |Jul precipitation days = 1.3 |Aug precipitation days = 1.9 |Sep precipitation days = 3.0 |Oct precipitation days = 4.4 |Nov precipitation days = 5.8 |Dec precipitation days = 7.9 |Jan snow inch = 4.2 |Feb snow inch = 3.3 |Mar snow inch = 0.8 |Apr snow inch = 0.0 |May snow inch = 0.0 |Jun snow inch = 0.0 |Jul snow inch = 0.0 |Aug snow inch = 0.0 |Sep snow inch = 0.0 |Oct snow inch = 0.0 |Nov snow inch = 2.2 |Dec snow inch = 5.7 |year snow inch = |unit snow days = 0.1 in |Jan snow days = 2.5 |Feb snow days = 1.7 |Mar snow days = 0.4 |Apr snow days = 0.0 |May snow days = 0.0 |Jun snow days = 0.0 |Jul snow days = 0.0 |Aug snow days = 0.0 |Sep snow days = 0.0 |Oct snow days = 0.0 |Nov snow days = 1.1 |Dec snow days = 2.5 |source 1 = NOAA |source 2 = National Weather Service (snow/snow days 1981–2010) }} ==Highways== * - US 26 * - US 93 * - SH-24 * - SH-75 - Sawtooth Scenic Byway The four highways converge in Shoshone, the southern terminus of SH 75.
