It is located on the north side of Shelter Island, surrounding the village of [[Dering Harbor, New York|Dering Harbor]]. The population density was {{convert|183.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,374 housing units at an average density of {{convert|256.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.17% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.31% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.41% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 1.12% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.33% of the population.

There were 459 households, of which 16.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.62.

14.9% of the population were under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 14.3% from 25 to 44, 31.9% from 45 to 64, and 35.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 56 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The [[median household income]] was $65,446 and the median family income was $76,162. Males had a median income of $46,750 compared with $37,955 for females. The [[per capita income]] was $34,083.
