==Geography==
Sharpsburg is located in the northern corner of Wilson County and the southwestern corner of Edgecombe County, and near the southeastern corner of Nash County. [[U.S. Route 301]] passes through the center of town. Downtown Rocky Mount is {{convert|6|mi|0}} to the north, and [[Wilson, North Carolina|Wilson]] is {{convert|12|mi}} to the south.

As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 2,421 people, 884 households, and 649 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|2,646.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 994 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1,086.7|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 39.45% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 58.65% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.21% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.08% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.08% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.54% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.99% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.94% of the population.

There were 884 households, out of which 43.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 27.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 34.6% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $27,908, and the median income for a family was $30,192. Males had a median income of $26,818 versus $21,422 for females.
