==Geography==
The community is in southeastern Monmouth County, in the southeastern part of Neptune Township. It is bordered to the northeast by [[Neptune City, New Jersey|Neptune City]], to the southeast by [[Belmar, New Jersey|Belmar]], and to the southwest by [[Wall Township, New Jersey|Wall Township]]. The community sits on a wide peninsula that is bordered to the east and south by the [[Shark River (New Jersey)|Shark River]] estuary. The [[New Jersey Route 18]] expressway forms the western border of the community, with access from [[New Jersey Route 33]] where it touches the northernmost point of the CDP.

According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], the Shark River Hills CDP has a total area of {{convert|1.23|mi2|2}}, including {{convert|0.86|mi2|2}} of land and {{convert|0.37|mi2|2}} of water (30.27%).<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2024"/>

The [[2010 United States census]] counted 3,697 people, 1,511 households, and 1,065 families in the CDP. The [[population density]] was {{convert|4149.9|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|people&nbsp;|people|}}. There were 1,577 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1770.2|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup was 96.51% (3,568) [[White (U.S. census)|White]], 0.89% (33) [[Black (U.S. census)|Black or African American]], 0.19% (7) [[Native American (U.S. census)|Native American]], 1.11% (41) [[Asian (U.S. census)|Asian]], 0.03% (1) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.54% (20) from [[Race and ethnicity in the United States census#Race|other races]], and 0.73% (27) from two or more races. There were 1,509 households, out of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.03.<ref name=Census2000/>

In the CDP the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The [[Neptune Township Schools]] serve students in [[pre-kindergarten]] through [[twelfth grade]] from Shark River Hills and the entire township. Shark River Hills Elementary School, founded in 1956, is the only school in the community.
