'''Shannon''' is a town in [[Lee County, Mississippi|Lee County]], [[Mississippi]]. The population was 1,496 at the [[2020 United States census|2020 Census]].

Shannon is located on [[Mississippi Highway 145]], west of [[U.S. Route 45]]. [[Chiwapa Creek]] flows south of the town.

==History==
The town is named for Samuel Shannon, who purchased land at that location from [[Chickasaw]] Chief Itawamba in the early 1800s, then built a cabin and a farm.  More settlers arrived following the Treaty of Pontotoc, which ceding Chickasaw land in exchange for financial compensation.<ref name="Town">{{cite web | title = History of Shannon | publisher = Town of Shannon | url = http://townofshannon.org/index.php/history}}</ref>

In the early 1800s, Constantine Shannon brought strawberry plants from Shannon to [[Plant City, Florida]], enabling the creation of a multimillion-dollar industry in Plant City.<ref>{{cite book | title = Plant City | publisher = Arcadia  | year = 2005 | isbn = 9780738517384 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=MgkdgBNz7jIC&pg=PP1}}</ref>

A church was established in 1839.<ref name="Town"/>

The original townsite was north of the present location, and was moved when the [[Mobile and Ohio Railroad]] was constructed through the community in the 1850s.  Shannon was incorporated in 1860 and a post office was established.  Shannon was originally part of Itawamba County, but became part of Lee county after that county formed in 1866.<ref name="Town"/>

Commerce expanded in Shannon, and there was a corn elevator, grain elevator, and three cotton gins.  Around 1915, Coca-Cola was bottled in Shannon.<ref name="Town"/>

The old Francis Store, one of the town's original buildings, is now a restaurant owned by the Town of Shannon.<ref name="Town"/>

The population density was {{convert|403.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 691 housing units at an average density of {{convert|168.3|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 44.42% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 54.19% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.06% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.12% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.84% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.36% from two or more races. ==Economy==
In 2005, [[General Atomics]] opened a $38 million manufacturing and test facility in Shannon.
