The township was first proposed in 1870 under the name Thorp Township. It was not officially established until March 12, 1871, when it was set aside from the southern half of [[Colfax Township, Wexford County, Michigan|Colfax Township]] and renamed Selma Township.<ref>{{cite web|last=Selma Township|url=http://selmatownship-mi.org/History|title=Selma Township: History|date=2022|accessdate=June 29, 2022}}</ref>

According to the [[United States Census Bureau|U.S. Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of {{convert|35.99|sqmi|km2|2}}, of which {{convert|34.31|sqmi|km2|2}} is land and {{convert|1.68|sqmi|km2|2}} (4.67%) is water.

The northern portion of [[Lake Mitchell (Michigan)|Lake Mitchell]] is located within the township.

==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 1,915 people, 757 households, and 548 families residing in the township. The population density was {{convert|55.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,086 housing units at an average density of {{convert|31.5|/mi2|/km2|disp=preunit|units&nbsp;|units|}}. The racial makeup of the township was 97.13% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.63% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.99% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.10% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.31% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.84% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.68% of the population.

There were 757 households, out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the township the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 107.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $37,287, and the median income for a family was $41,641. Males had a median income of $31,103 versus $22,074 for females. About 5.5% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.

Selma Township is served by two public school districts.
