On June 3, 1959, a severe thunderstorm dropped up to {{convert|18|in|cm}} of hail on the town. Hail fell in the town for a record 85 minutes and the temperature dropped from {{cvt|80|F}} to {{cvt|38|F}} at the height of the storm. On May 24, 2021 an [[List of United States tornadoes from April to May 2021#May 24 event|EF1 tornado]] hit the community, flipping a train and damaging buildings. The [[population density]] was {{convert|730.0|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 118 housing units at an average density of {{convert|393.3|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.5% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 2.3% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]]. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 6.8% of the population.

There were 101 households, of which 23.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.6% were non-families. 39.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.96.

The median age in the city was 43.7 years. 23.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.9% were from 25 to 44; 28.3% were from 45 to 64; and 19.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 56.6% male and 43.4% female.

The racial makeup of the city was 99.50% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], and 0.50% from two or more races.

There were 103 households, out of which 19.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.6% were non-families. 44.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.95 and the average family size was 2.73.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.4% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 26.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 105.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,750, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $20,417 versus $16,250 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $17,137. About 8.9% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 16.0% of those under the age of eighteen and 6.1% of those 65 or over.

==Education==
The community is served by [[Golden Plains USD 316]] public school district.  School unification consolidated [[Menlo, Kansas|Menlo]], [[Rexford, Kansas|Rexford]] and Selden schools forming USD 316. Selden High School was closed through school unification.
