== History ==
The town was first settled in 1805 by Joseph Knight, a [[minuteman]] in the [[American Revolution]], from [[Oneida County, New York|Oneida County]]. Knights Creek, which flows into the [[Genesee River]] near Scio, is named for him. The town of Scio was created in 1823 from the town of [[Angelica, New York|Angelica]]. Some of its territory was later lost during the formation of the towns of [[Amity, New York|Amity]] (1830), [[Wellsville, New York|Wellsville]] (1855), and [[Willing, New York|Willing]] (1851).

*Marine [[Corporal]] [[Jason Dunham]], the second recipient of the [[Medal of Honor]] in [[Operation Iraqi Freedom]], was born in Scio.

The [[Genesee River]] flows northward through the town. Knights Creek and Vandermark Creek flow into the river by [[Scio (CDP), New York|Scio village]].

[[New York State Route 19]] is a major north-south highway passing through the town. Scio is located on the [[mainline (railway)|mainline]] of the [[Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad (2001)|Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad]].

The population density was {{convert|54.3|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 894 housing units at an average density of {{convert|25.4|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 97.39% [[white (U.S. Census)|white]], .26% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], .42% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], .26% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], .05% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], .47% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.15% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were .37% of the population.

There were 729 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% were non-families. 19.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.9 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,679, and the median income for a family was $38,250. Males had a median income of $30,242 versus $20,595 for females. About 11.5% of families and 14.6% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 21% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
