It is the capital of the Kreis (district) Schleswig-Flensburg. It has a population of about 27,000, the main industries being leather and food processing. It takes its name from the Schlei (Slien), an inlet of the Baltic Sea at the end of which it sits, and vik or vig which means "bay" in Old Norse and Danish. Schleswig or Slesvig therefore means "bay of the Schlei". ==History== The Viking settlement of Hedeby, located south of the modern town, was first mentioned in 804. It was a powerful settlement in the Baltic region, dominating the area for more than 200 years. In 1050, following several destructions, the population was moved to the opposite shore of the Schlei, becoming the city of Schleswig. In 1066 Hedeby was finally destroyed, and Schleswig remained a part of the Danish kingdom. In 1544, Gottorf Castle became the residence of the local rulers. The dukes of Gottorf were vassals of the Danish kings and ruled over much of present-day Schleswig-Holstein. In 1721, when the Great Northern War ended, the dukes of Gottorf lost their power and their land became Danish crown land. After the Second Schleswig War (1864), Schleswig was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia. ==Geography== Schleswig lies at the western end of the Schlei Förde, which separates the two peninsulas of Angeln and Schwansen, and is on the western edge of the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands on the transition to the Geest country. The urban area ranges from 0 to 20 m above sea level. Brautsee (lake) is in the town. The nearest major cities are Flensburg, Husum and Kiel. Autobahn 7 runs immediately west of the city. Highways 76 and 77 end in Schleswig and B 201 runs to the north of the town. Schleswig station is a stop for InterCity and Intercity-Express trains and is on the Hamburg–Neumünster–Flensburg and Husum–Kiel lines. ===Climate=== The climate is oceanic (Köppen: Cfb), humid and mild with a slight continental influence. The annual mean temperature is 8 °C and precipitation averages 925 mm. {{Weather box | location = Schleswig (1991–2020 normals) | metric first = Y | single line = Y |collapsed = Y | Jan record high C =11.7 | Feb record high C =14.3 | Mar record high C =20.2 | Apr record high C =25.7 | May record high C =27.6 | Jun record high C =30.5 | Jul record high C =31.1 | Aug record high C =32.0 | Sep record high C =29.3 | Oct record high C =23.9 | Nov record high C =17.8 | Dec record high C =13.7 | Jan record low C =-16.6 | Feb record low C =-18.0 | Mar record low C =-13.7 | Apr record low C =-4.4 | May record low C =-1.1 | Jun record low C =2.2 | Jul record low C =5.6 | Aug record low C =6.0 | Sep record low C =2.3 | Oct record low C =-2.4 | Nov record low C =-11.5 | Dec record low C =-18.1 |Jan high C = 3.7 |Feb high C = 4.3 |Mar high C = 7.6 |Apr high C = 12.6 |May high C = 16.8 |Jun high C = 19.7 |Jul high C = 22.1 |Aug high C = 21.9 |Sep high C = 18.0 |Oct high C = 12.8 |Nov high C = 7.7 |Dec high C = 4.6 | year high C = 12.6 |Jan mean C = 1.7 |Feb mean C = 1.9 |Mar mean C = 4.0 |Apr mean C = 7.9 |May mean C = 11.9 |Jun mean C = 15.0 |Jul mean C = 17.3 |Aug mean C = 17.1 |Sep mean C = 13.8 |Oct mean C = 9.6 |Nov mean C = 5.4 |Dec mean C = 2.7 |year mean C = 9.0 |Jan low C = -0.5 |Feb low C = -0.5 |Mar low C = 1.0 |Apr low C = 3.8 |May low C = 7.2 |Jun low C = 10.5 |Jul low C = 12.9 |Aug low C = 13.0 |Sep low C = 10.3 |Oct low C = 6.7 |Nov low C = 3.1 |Dec low C = 0.6 | year low C = 5.6 | precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation mm = 81.3 |Feb precipitation mm = 61.4 |Mar precipitation mm = 58.4 |Apr precipitation mm = 41.7 |May precipitation mm = 56.1 |Jun precipitation mm = 76.3 |Jul precipitation mm = 92.9 |Aug precipitation mm = 90.4 |Sep precipitation mm = 81.0 |Oct precipitation mm = 89.8 |Nov precipitation mm = 75.0 |Dec precipitation mm = 86.1 | year precipitation mm = 890.4 | unit precipitation days = 1.0 mm |Jan precipitation days = 19.1 |Feb precipitation days = 16.6 |Mar precipitation days = 16.6 |Apr precipitation days = 13.0 |May precipitation days = 13.8 |Jun precipitation days = 15.1 |Jul precipitation days = 15.6 |Aug precipitation days = 16.5 |Sep precipitation days = 16.3 |Oct precipitation days = 18.1 |Nov precipitation days = 19.1 |Dec precipitation days = 19.8 |year precipitation days = 199.6 |Jan sun = 43.7 |Feb sun = 62.8 |Mar sun = 119.7 |Apr sun = 186.0 |May sun = 234.7 |Jun sun = 220.9 |Jul sun = 226.6 |Aug sun = 207.8 |Sep sun = 148.5 |Oct sun = 101.7 |Nov sun = 54.4 |Dec sun = 37.2 |year sun = 1646.4 |Jan humidity = 89.9 |Feb humidity = 87.3 |Mar humidity = 82.7 |Apr humidity = 76.4 |May humidity = 74.8 |Jun humidity = 76.0 |Jul humidity = 76.9 |Aug humidity = 79.0 |Sep humidity = 83.3 |Oct humidity = 86.5 |Nov humidity = 90.0 |Dec humidity = 91.2 |unit snow days = 1.0 cm |Jan snow days = 7.4 |Feb snow days = 7.5 |Mar snow days = 4.1 |Apr snow days = 0.2 |May snow days = 0 |Jun snow days = 0 |Jul snow days = 0 |Aug snow days = 0 |Sep snow days = 0 |Oct snow days = 0 |Nov snow days = 0.8 |Dec snow days = 4.5 |year snow days = | source 1 = World Meteorological Organization<ref name = noaa>{{cite web | url = ftp://ftp.atdd.noaa.gov/pub/GCOS/WMO-Normals/TABLES/REG_VI/DL/10035.TXT | title = Schleswig (10035) -
