Schlater is located in northwestern Leflore County. [[Mississippi Highway 442]] passes through the town, leading east {{convert|3|mi|0}} to [[U.S. Route 49E]] and west {{convert|10|mi|0}} to [[Doddsville, Mississippi|Doddsville]] and [[U.S. Route 49W]]. Via US-49E Schlater is {{convert|17|mi}} northwest of [[Greenwood, Mississippi|Greenwood]], the Leflore [[county seat]].

As of the [[2010 United States Census]], there were 310 people living in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 68.7% Black, 29.0% White and 1.0% from two or more races. 1.3% were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The population density was {{convert|332.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 150 housing units at an average density of {{convert|128.7|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 60.57% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 38.92% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]] and 0.52% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]].
