The town is on the eastern border of the county and the southern border of the state of New York. Sanford is east of [[Binghamton, New York|Binghamton]].

Early ownership of the area was primarily divided into the Livingstone patent, the Fisher and Norton tract, and the Randolph patent. The region was first settled ''circa'' 1787.

The town of Sanford was formed in 1821 from the town of [[Windsor, New York|Windsor]].

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|235.7|km2|disp=flip}}, of which {{convert|233.4|km2|disp=flip}} is land and {{convert|2.4|km2|disp=flip}}, or 1.01%, is water.<ref name="Census 2010"/>

The eastern town line is the border of [[Delaware County, New York|Delaware County]], the northern town boundary is the border of [[Chenango County, New York|Chenango County]], and the southern town line is the border of [[Pennsylvania]], bordering [[Wayne County, Pennsylvania|Wayne]] and [[Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania|Susquehanna]] counties.

[[New York State Route 17|New York Route 17]] crosses the town. [[New York State Route 41]] intersects NY-17 west of McClure. The part of NY-17 near Deposit was one of the last sections to be completed in this part of New York, forcing travelers to exit at Deposit.

The [[West Branch Delaware River|West Branch]] of the [[Delaware River]] forms part of the eastern border of the town.

The population density was {{convert|27.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,545 housing units at an average density of {{convert|17.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 98.26% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.48% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.08% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.24% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.52% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.40% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.10% of the population.

There were 983 households, out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,309, and the median income for a family was $40,472. Males had a median income of $31,344 versus $20,365 for females.
