== History ==
Salisbury contains parts of the [[Jerseyfield Patent]] of 1770. The town was formed in 1797 from the town of [[Palatine, New York|Palatine]] while in [[Montgomery County, New York|Montgomery County]]. Salisbury was annexed to Herkimer County in 1817.

The population of Salisbury in 1865 was 2,123.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|280.2|sqkm|order=flip}}, of which {{convert|278.1|sqkm|order=flip}} are land and {{convert|2.2|sqkm|order=flip}}, or 0.77%, are water.<ref name="Census 2010"/>

The northern town line is the border of [[Hamilton County, New York|Hamilton County]], and the eastern town line is the border of [[Fulton County, New York|Fulton County]]. [[East Canada Creek]] marks the southeastern town line.

The population density was {{convert|18.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 926 housing units at an average density of {{convert|8.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.36% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.15% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.05% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.41% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.10% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.92% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.15% of the population.

There were 689 households, out of which 40.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% were non-families. 20.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.24.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 104.7 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,469, and the median income for a family was $36,384. Males had a median income of $26,314 versus $18,594 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town was $12,642.  About 8.4% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 14.0% of those age 65 or over.
