==History==

The St. Joseph area was settled by German Catholic immigrants in the early 1870s.  These settlers established [[St. Joseph Church (St. Joseph, Tennessee)|St. Joseph Catholic Church]], which is still home to a Catholic parish. ==Geography==
St. Joseph is located at {{coord|35|2|6|N|87|30|8|W|type:city}} (35.034920, -87.502158).<ref name="GR1">{{cite web|url=https://www.census.gov/geographies/reference-files/time-series/geo/gazetteer-files.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|accessdate=April 23, 2011|date=February 12, 2011|title=US Gazetteer files: 2010, 2000, and 1990}}</ref>  The city is situated on a relatively broad ridge between the [[Shoal Creek (Tennessee River)|Shoal Creek Valley]] to the west and the Bluewater Creek Valley to the east.  Little Bluewater Creek, a tributary of the latter, flows through St. Joseph.  The city's boundaries stretch northeastward to the outskirts of [[Loretto, Tennessee|Loretto]] and southward to the Tennessee-Alabama state line.

[[U.S. Route 43]] traverses St. Joseph, connecting the city to [[Lawrenceburg, Tennessee|Lawrenceburg]] to the northeast and the [[Muscle Shoals, Alabama|Muscle Shoals]] area to the south.  [[Tennessee State Route 227]] connects St. Joseph with [[Iron City, Tennessee|Iron City]] in the Shoal Creek Valley to the west.

The population density was {{convert|231.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 374 housing units at an average density of {{convert|104.2|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the city was 98.19% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.97% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.12% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], and 0.72% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.29% of the population.

There were 342 households, out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,961, and the median income for a family was $30,781. Males had a median income of $26,375 versus $20,486 for females.
