Indian kingdoms such as the [[Kalinga (historical region)|Kalinga]] from as early as 2nd century CE are believed to have had sailing ships. Dhows were often built with teak planks from India and Southeast Asia, sewn together with coconut husk fiber—no nails were employed. In harbor, a sailing ship stood at anchor, unless it needed to be loaded or unloaded at a [[dock]] or [[pier]], in which case it might be warped alongside or towed by a tug. Warping involved using a long rope (the warp) between the ship and a fixed point on the shore. This was pulled on by a capstan on shore, or on the ship.
